Environmental critics are calling on the Bay Area air district agency to walk the walk. The agency in charge of alerting the public on “Spare the Air” days has an executive perk that pays for up to $675 a month for a car. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District defends the policy, saying its staff have to go to meetings and conferences outside the range of public transit. But a Sierra Club spokesman says an agency in charge of air quality should not give an incentive to drive. BAAQMD headquarters are five blocks from San Francisco City Hall, a city transit hub.
