San Francisco named greenest city

San Francisco has been named the “greenest city” in North America. It even beat out the Canadians. Mandatory composting and recycling, energy efficient building standards, clean air and public transit were all qualities that earn SF top awards in a study commissioned by Siemens. The results were announced this week at the Aspen Ideas Festival and the city’s Department of Environment Director Melanie Nutter was on hand to accept the award. She said SF needs “to continue to push the envelope.” Oddly enough, SF also recently earned the dubious degree of 12th dirtiest city in America by Travel + Leisure magazine for its unsanitary streets.
