In Boston they called it the “Big Dig.” But San Francisco is not sinking a highway, it’s sinking a new, massive subway that will go from South of Market to Chinatown. A $234 million contract was just awarded to begin the Central Subway project, the first of a total of $1.6 billion in public money. Construction is expected to start by the end of this year in what amounts to the biggest public transit expansion for the city in who knows how long. The subway is supposed to relieve pressure from the jam-packed city streets. Take a ride through Chinatown and you know you’re not going anywhere fast. [Read more- The Bay Citizen].
